Ian Atkinson is an experienced trial and appellate lawyer, who focuses on criminal defense, tax representation, commercial litigation, and professional and student misconduct proceedings. He is also a professional mediator.
As a criminal defense attorney, Ian regularly advises clients on complex white-collar matters, including health-care fraud, tax, money laundering, wire and mail fraud allegations, and other investigations.
In his tax practice, Ian helps clients develop strategies to resolve compliance concerns, state and federal tax deficiencies, civil audits, criminal investigations, and IRS litigation. Ian also assists individual and corporate clients in pursuing refund suits to recover tax wrongly paid at both the state and federal level and provides general tax advice.
Ian has extensive experience advocating for students accused of misconduct, including in Title IX proceedings and federal litigation seeking to overturn Title IX outcomes. He also defends doctors, lawyers, and other professionals in professional liability and disciplinary proceedings.
In his civil practice, Ian defends individuals and businesses in a wide range of commercial disputes, including contract disputes, succession matters, business torts, and other litigation before state and federal courts. In addition, Ian advises artists and businesses on intellectual property concerns, such as trademark and copyright law, licensing, and other matters.
Ian also regularly mediates all manner of disputes, including as an appointed member of the Hurricane Ida neutral panels for Orleans Parish Civil District Court and the Eastern District of Louisiana. He is available for flat fee or hourly rate mediations.
